Kingfisher
His majesty the kingfisher bird often
Stands on the snow’s wrist all night long,
Unbubbling at morning the film of fire,
The big chrysalis of his blue wings.

Unbubbling at morning the film of fire,
The big chrysalis of his blue wings.
Kingfisher, fisherking, a melting music,
He falls, a sword-bright shadow, through the dusk,
A sapphire spark, a hole in Heaven, head-
long Lucifer, wanderer in new winds.

Minnows and other mercies serve the king,
Shoot down the frosty stream like spindrift stars.
My cruel flame, my lambent royal watcher,
Flickers above them, quick in the tight air.
