“EVERYTHING about Tucker was business man ” — and he had the passions and instincts of business men the world over, But Tucker operated frankly outside the law, first in protection rackets and bootlegging and then in the number pool game. Until special prosecutor Hall began nosing around, Tucker could buy anything he needed, from trigger men to police protection. But when Hall went after the rackets, things did not go so well: Tucker’s people began to crack under real and imagined strains. The reader occasionally catches a brief glimpse of likable little people, but. for the most part he has no desire for more than a vicarious acquaintance with Tucker’s minions. The book is depressing — but it is also convincing.
