
The Books That Take Revenge, Centuries Later
A new history of the Red Scare prompts the question: Does literature still have enough influence to bring down the powerful?
W. J. J. GORDON,a lecturer in the Engineering Department of Applied Physics at Harvard, is also president of Synectics, Inc., a consulting firm concerned with augmenting the creative output of industrial research organizations. Mr. Gordon has had two previous stories in the ATLANTIC, “ The Pures” and “Mrs. Schyler’s Plot.”
A Vassar graduate and the mother of three children, MAY DIKEMANmade her first appearance in the ATLANTIC in 1961 with her short story “ The Tender Mercies,” which won an Atlantic “First” prize. Her second story in our pages, “ The Sound of Young Laughter,” has been selected for the Martha Foley collection, THE BEST AMERICAN SHORT STORIES.
WILLIAM HUMPHREY was born in Clarksville, Texas, in 1924. His first book THE LAST HUSBAND AND OTHER STORIES, WQS published in 1953; five years later, his novel, HOME FROM THE HILL, which appeared under the Knopf imprint, received wide critical acclaim. Mr. Humphrey is now living in Europe.
SUSAN M. BLACKis a young writer who lives in New York and has contributed articles to various magazines. She is interested in the theater, fine arts, and travel. At present Miss Black is a staff writer for the NEW YORKER. This is her first short story.
Born and brought up in the Bronx, PETER S. BEAGLE studied creative writing under Edwin L. Peterson at the University of Pittsburgh and then spent a year on the European continent. His first novel, A FINE AND PRIVATE PLACE,was published by Viking in 1960, and he is now at work on another book of fiction.
SHIRLEY W. SCHOONOVER’S stories have appeared in NEW CAMPUS WRITING II, TRANSATLANTIC REVIEW, and in the 1962 O. HENRY PRIZE STORIES. Her first novel, MOUNTAIN OF WINTER, will be published by Coward-McCann sometime next year.
“I’ve spent a great deal of time in Europe,”writes ALTHAEA URN. “In my veins there flows the blood of Spain, Ireland, and France, and I grew up breathing the atmosphere of literary reference. My own first poem appeared in a magazine when I was fifteen.” Author of two novels and one volume of verse, Miss Urn divides her year between the eastern shore of Maryland and the French Riviera.

She is the author of two novels, THE HAPPY SUMMED DAYSand GREEN HOLLY,and is now working on short stories. The ATLANTICpublished her story ”The Pride of the Morning” in February of this year.
CHARLES C. O’CONNELL was born in and lives in the city of Cork, He tells us, “Though writing is what I want to do most, my wife and three children are interested in eating regularly; as a consequence, I hold down the position of general works manager in one of Ireland’s largest hosiery and textile factories.”
