W. B. Ready

A Cardiff Irishman who is now teaching at the University of Minnesota, W. B. READY served in the British Army in North Africa, was wounded in Italy, and while convalescing met his wife, then a lieutenant in a Cana. dian. Army Nurse corps. He has already published a number of short stories in the Atlantic, most of them having to do with a high-spirited team of Irish rugger players. The Bruce Publishing Company will bring them out in book form this spring under the title of Barring the Weight.

This is the third story the Atlantic has published by W. B. READY.In writing to us about his work, he said: “As for myself, I am thirty-four, a Cardiff Irishman who married a Canadian girl overseas. We have two sons, Patrick and Vincent. I am a member of the History Department at the University of Minnesota and I teach a course in creative writing at the College of St. Thomas in St. Paul. Most of my energy goes into writing and thinking about Thomas D’Arcy McGhee, a Canadian founding father.”

I hope one day to write a novel on the Canadian West that will compare with The Big Sky.”

An Irishman who was educated by the Christian Brothers and at the Universities of Wales and Oxford (Balliol College), W. B. READY married a Canadian girl while in the Service and is now teaching in a private school in Winnipeg. This is his first short story to be published, but he tells us that he wants to write a novel on the Canadian West that will compare with The Big Sky, and one day hopes to have a whole book about Brother John and all the other people who have fashioned him.
