In July, 1961, the ATLANTICintroduced to its readers a new young writer, Tom Cole, whose story “Familiar Usage in Leningrad" subsequently won the Atlantic “First” prize and an O. Henry award. The following story will appear in his book AN END TO CHIVALRY, to be published next month by AtlanticLittle, Brown.
In July, 1961, the ATLANTIC introduced to its readers a new young writer, TOM COLE, whose short story “Familiar Usage in Leningrad” has been awarded the top Atlantic “First" prize. Mr. Cole is now teaching a course in Slavic at M.I.T. and is working on a novel about Russia.
TOM COLE has always had a compelling desire to write. He received his B. A. in American History and Literature from Harvard in 1954, served his term in the Army, and returned to Harvard for his master’s degree in Slavic. His background in the Russian language made him eminently qualified to become a member of the American Exhibition in Moscow in 1959, and from his experience he has drawn the story which follows.
