On New Year’s Day, a 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck Japan’s Noto Peninsula, followed by several strong aftershocks. More than 60 people were killed, and hundreds of homes and larger buildings were damaged or destroyed. Japanese rescue crews continue to search for survivors and work to reach isolated communities as heavy rains threaten to cause landslides on unstable hillsides.
