The lieutenant general was being denounced, as earlier that month, he and his wife, the daughter of Saddam Hussein, had defected from Iraq and provided intelligence to Western powers. #

The Endeavour had already been delayed by three weeks to allow for repairs to be made to the solid rocket motors. It finally launched successfully on September 7, 1995. #
