Mike Vanne, of Beverly, Mass., writes: "Does English have a word for the place that someone goes to cast a ballot? All I ever hear on the news is 'polling place,' and I know that there has to be a better word than that, especially in America, the birthplace of democracy."

Our precinct has replaced the old ballot box outside the voting booth with a machine that gobbles up the ballots and registers the votes -- no idea what the official name of said machine is though. (there was an interim method in which levers were pushed and votes automatically registered, but that method was discarded, I suppose because there was no hard copy produced?)
