Mark Pener, of Somerville, Massachusetts, writes: "Many times after I've heard of something for the first time -- a food, a place, a person, etc. -- I start reading or hearing about it everywhere. Is there a word for this? Shouldn't there be?"

Awareness is correct, but a little too easy. As when you begin to consider trading cars for some specific vehicle, suddenly every fifth car/truck is your new love. We need something like specific-awareness.

Fashionable.
Words become fashionable (or fall out of fashion) much more quickly these days, due to ubiquitous media. The most common sources for fashionable words are high technology ("nerd words," if you will), street culture (kids say the darndest things) and other languages ("Zeitgeist" is a perfect recent example).

I hate to borrow from the French, but how
about deja-new

Isn't the simple "fad" appropriate? Although I'll confess a fondness for the French, "dernier cri."

I've never posted here before and I'm just making this up as I go along but I was thinking that these things are really present prior to our awareness of them but are "below the threshold of conscious perception" or "subliminal". Once we become aware of the possibility of their existence then they've been "desubliminated" and we've experienced "desublimination". What do you think?
