Steve Cappadoccio, of Milton, Mass., writes: "As a (I don't have to be ashamed to admit it) Red Sox fan, I wonder if there is a single word for the triumph of hope over experience -- for continuing to root for my team, year in, year out, even though they always always always disappoint me."

as suggested by Roger's reply, most of the words that approach this concept do so from a negative direction; to wit: credulity, gullibility, dupability, naivete.

Steve, I have a word not for your action of rooting but for you, the rooter: "infracaninophile," a champion of the underdog (in your case the perennial loser). It was coined by Christopher Morley in the preface to "The Complete Sherlock Holmes." You'll find it in my book "There's a Word for It!" (Pocket Books, 1997).
