well, I have to ask why you would jettison 'discard' which, according to one usage guide, implies the letting go or throwing away of something that has become useless or superfluous though often not intrinsically valueless -- and if the object at hand is truly worthless, you can always just scrap (or junk) it.

I'm the one who posted this one. I probably should have mentioned I encountered this particular word vacuum while writing a statute -- so I needed a word that would fit in with all the legal jargon that was around it. "Jettison," "scrap," "toss," "shitcan," and the others just don't work in legalese.

Ohhhh, legal words, to dispose in a wordy legal type manner. Hmmm, since I remember hearing that possession is 9/10's of the law...how about dispossess? I don't suppose disown would work.

When I read that, the verb "chuck" shouts in my mind. It has the connotations of throwing something away in a disgusted manner. Fun word.
