Rinna Samuel, of Rehovot, Israel, writes, "Of course, there's always the yawning abyss created by the absence in English of anything remotely resembling the spiteful, infinitely powerful defiance of 'davka' of Hebrew (and Yiddish), which as far as I know can only be rendered weakly as 'just because' or 'all the more.' As in, for instance, 'Since you have driven me mad about going to Paris, I davka booked us into a hotel in Venice!' More nobly and famously, the spirit of Masada -- suicide rather than surrender to the Romans -- was in a big way davka. Anyhow, maybe someone can provide a snappy and ringing English equivalent."
