In the 1796 U.S. presidential election, a French diplomat campaigned so aggressively for what famously Francophile politician that scholars think it might have boosted his opponent, John Adams, to victory?
The politician eventually won in 1800.
And by the way, did you know—classic fun fact incoming—that thanks to its overseas territories, France technically spans more time zones than any other country?
The European part of France exists entirely within one time zone. But add French Guiana, then Tahiti, Réunion, Mayotte, and a bunch of other little islands (including itty-bitty, uninhabited Clipperton Island, south of Baja California; who knew?), and the French Republic suddenly has a dozen time zones.
Then, if you count Adélie Land, the sliver of Antarctica that France claims, the number bumps up to 13. But timekeeping in Antarctica is quirky—a subject for another day!
Until tomorrow.
