Litter From Rio

don marquis wrote a
flock of books about a cockroach named
archy and a cat named mehitabel and
the books all looked like this because
archy typed them and he could not
use the shift key as he was a
cockroach and everybody knows cockroaches
cant use shift keys anyway
you have to be over forty to
remember archy and mehitabel or
don marquis either for
that matter but i am so i
remember and i remember that i
used to think the books were fun
and i also used to think that
archy was cute as bugs but
after living in rio de janeiro a while
i no longer think bugs are cute and
for my money the least cute of
all bugs are cockroaches
down here in rio we got roaches who
while they cant maybe type could
easily move furniture
it is my considered opinion that
don marquis never saw a cockroach in
his whole entire life or if
he did he only saw them one at a
time and not all at once like
we have them here in rio
de janeiro i am
pretty much of an expert on
cockroaches they are not too smart
and are easy to kill being rather
slow on their feet they live
on greasy spots and roach powder and
the best way to kill them is with a
rolled up time magazine
latin american edition the
new yorker is too heavy and the
local newspapers tear after maybe
two or three but the time
latin american edition is just right
which i figure accounts for
fifty per cent of their sales in
south america at least i
dont know if don marquis is
still alive but if he is i
wish he would come down here to
rio de janeiro and teach these
cockroaches to type or lay brick or
do something useful instead of
just wandering around on
walls scaring people half to
death like they do now
