Three Birds With One Stone

by DAVID McCORD

PELICAN

THE pelican, a totipalmate bird,
Bill very large, distensible gular pouch.
Is really in himself enough absurd.
For anything beyond that, I’ll not vouch.

BOWERBIRD

THE bowerhird, oscine and Aussie both,
Builds for himself a “playhouse” — quoth, unquoth -
Or bower used for courting girl bb’s.
If any bird’s original, then he’s.

WATER OUZEL

MISUNDERSTOOD and largely mispronounced,
The water ouzel, youzel be advised,
Dives into mountain streams, fresh air renounced,
And walks along the bottom. You surprised?
