POEMS

by ROBERTA TEALE SWARTZ
LOVE stalks me on a lonely road:
I hear the cracking of the bough
And peer, and nothing see, but know
His eyes are looking at me now.
I wear each day these pearls of sweat
And do not dare to call or run.
The forest is as still as death;
The silence glitters with the sun.
Is there no traveler in this place,
No voice to break the dread design?
Blindly I walk the dust and feel
His is shadow almost mix with mine.
And I shall never reach the town.
My will and I will surely part.
In jungle grass I shall fall down
And let the tiger eat my heart.
