The Gardener at Kew

by HELEN BEVINGTON
VISTAS I love and gardeners at Kew
Like Capability Brown, whom England knew
As builder of the ha-ha, a small ditch
In place of a garden wall to spoil the view.
When each rapt visitor cried “ha-ha,” which
Meant only he was so engrossed at Kew
In vistas, around 1752,
That happily he’d fallen flat in a ditch.
Capability Brown, aware that prospects please,
Saw in the ha-ha capabilities.
