Unclouded Summer

Alec Waugh
FARRAR, STRAUS
THE elder Waugh brother, Alec, does some revisiting of his own in this slight, nostalgic love story. Most of it unfolds during the unclouded summer of 1926, when the French Riviera was the enchanted playground of English aristocrats and expatriate American artists. Mr. Waugh’s hero is a young American painter who falls in love with the wife of an aging British diplomat. His pages have the agreeable savor of iced champagne, alfresco lobster luncheons, and gracious living. A conventional lightweight romance, recommended for a spring vacation in Bermuda or as antidote to the Kinsey Report.
