Wild Is the River

WILD IS THE RIVER $2.50 By Louis BromfieldHARPERS
THE author calls this a romantic novel, and after a dozen pages you realize that you must either take the book on his terms or drop it. If you are susceptible, you will find that the narrative moves with pace and color, that the love-making is done with a sensuous touch that piques experience, and that the clash between the Yankees of Butler’s Army of Occupation and the Creoles, Parisians, and blacks of New Orleans results in some very pretty fires, murders, and sudden deaths. Tom Bedlow (accent on the first syllable), the Baroness de Lèche, Hector MacTavish — all appear to advantage in fancy dress. If this reader had to believe in any one of them he would take the lady. But credulity is not necessary for this book’s enjoyment.
