FARRAR & RINEHART
TWENTY years in the life of Henry Woodward, an English surgeon, from his first landing in the Barbados in 1665 to his death on Port Royal Sound in the Carolinas in 1685, at the age of forty. Woodward was a real person and so were most of the other characters in the novel. Surely few men can ever have crowded more work, adventure, and romance into twenty years. His profession and his roving spirit took him to Florida, Jamaica, Nevis, and various parts of the Spanish Main, and on long journeys into inland America among Indian tribes. Passionately eager in the pursuit of knowledge and completely fearless when he could further his practice of surgery, medicine, and exploration, his courage and ability made him a power among the Indians and in the settling and development of the Charleston colony. His is a fascinating story of the days of the buccaneers and the opening up of the new continent. I he many characters are not only credible but convincing and often very amusing. The reader who values good writing will experience constant pleasure in the purity, firmness, and freshness of the style. Especially recommended tor boys in their late teens. R. M. G.
