The West Wind of Love

THIS is the third of the Winds of Love novels, preceded by the East and South. Few authors have handicapped themselves with sappier titles, and this is a pity, for the books are virile, sinewy narratives in the good tradition. The West Wind has less action than its predecessor, the South Wind, which dealt with the World War in the Near East and its breathless, deathless incident, but it is a strong, sustained story. The characters we have known before, principally John Ogilvie, his family and friends. There are the tragedies and the humors of everyday living, sensitive and rebellious people as well as the acquiescent, and, brooding over it all, the hint of a greater tragedy, that of the post-war years — when the North Wind shall blow. For admirers of Compton Mackenzie this book is, of course, a ‘must.’ For anyone at all it is a good novel.
