THIS is a noble book in the old tradition. An historical novel of Yorkshire in the days of Charles the First and Cromwell, it is a fine reconstruction of a period. And the long life story of Penninah Thorpe in those troubled years is told with deep feeling, almost with reverence. At first one feels that here is a Victorian novel, a kind of Lorna Doone of Yorkshire, but, as one reads on, the calm, sure, unhurried telling becomes entirely convincing. It is a book in the great and full tradition of the classic English novel. It has truth and beauty and a sense of the real values in human life.
