MR, DANIELS, who recently discovered his own South, has in this book explored New England. He approached this territory with an open mind and a genuine interest in the problems which now perplex it. As a Southerner he seems to be particularly interested in the effect on New England of the flight of its cotton mills to the South. The resultant unemployment in the great mill towns, such as Fall River, New Bedford, and Manchester, New Hampshire, the increase in the alien population, and the heavy toll taken by the depression — these are primarily the objectives in his search. He has time, however, to note the beauties and amenities of the region as well as the economic conditions. Altogether his analysis of New England conditions is that of a sympathetic friend, and New Englanders can read his book with profit and pleasure even though at times they will find it disturbing.
