In the Late Sixteen-Hundreds

A GROUP OF POEMS

LORD SORBETT wrote a Sonnett-Booke for Stella,
A sort of intellectual embrace
For the disdainful fair. He begged to place
It in her altarpiece as a predella
Of angels singing laudes a capella.
And then, before the book appeared — disgrace! —
She ran off with a man o’ the populace:
A clergyman! who wore shoes of prunella!
Lord Sorbett raised an eyebrow in despair;
But fortunately ‘Stella’ was a name
That might mean anyone adorable.
Therefore he ordered all his men to wear
The livery of the Duchess of Thélème,
Held back his book a month, and all went well.
