The Atlantic joined the Knight Media Forum in Miami on February 12 for timely discussions about press freedom, America’s shifting foreign policy, and the state of journalism, moderated by The Atlantic’s managing director for events, Evan Smith. Journalist Georgia Fort discussed the importance of a free press and her recent arrest following her coverage of a protest inside a Minnesota church. The audience also heard from members of The Atlantic’s national-security team—Tom Nichols, Missy Ryan, and Nancy A. Youssef—as they discussed reporting on national security amid the newest press restrictions. They explained the state of play inside the Pentagon and highlighted the real-world implications of the latest foreign-policy news from the Trump administration. The former Washington Post executive editor Martin Baron talked about the fallout from recent sweeping newsroom cuts at the Post and what they signal for journalism’s future.
